ATLANTA — Two officers in a remote Alaska town were ambushed as they chatted on a street. A California officer and deputy were killed by an arson suspect with a high-powered rifle as they tried to serve a warrant. Two other officers doing anti-drug work were gunned down by men along a busy Arkansas highway.
These so-called cluster killings of more than one officer helped make 2010 a particularly deadly year for law enforcement. Deaths in the line of duty jumped 37 percent to about 160 from 117 the year before, according to numbers as of Tuesday compiled by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, a nonprofit that tracks police deaths. >>>READ MORE |

Following a two year decline, law enforcement fatalities in 2010 spiked to 160. This was an increase of nearly 40 percent compared to last year, when 117 officers were killed in the line of duty. Preliminary data from the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund show that for the 13th year in a row, traffic fatalities were the leading cause of officer fatalities, with 73 officers killed in the line of duty—an increase of 43 percent from 2009.
Of the 73 traffic-related fatalities in 2010, 50 officers died in automobile crashes, 16 were struck and killed by automobiles while outside of their vehicles, 1 died in a bicycle accident, and 6 died in motorcycle crashes. >>>READ MORE

An Austin man whose motorcycle was hit by an Austin police car in May is suing the city and the companies that provide dispatch and communication services to the Police Department, according to a lawsuit filed Monday at the Sweatt Travis County Courthouse.
The suit said Louis Olivier, 71, suffered life-altering injuries May 29 when officer Damon Dunn ran a stop sign at Magazine Street and Lamplight Village Avenue in North Austin. At the time, Dunn was entering information on his laptop in his patrol car, the suit said.
Guy Watts, Olivier's attorney, said that because of the wreck, Olivier lost control of his right foot, cannot walk without assistance and cannot drive a car. >>>READ MORE

A Teaneck police officer died following a one-vehicle accident, according to a report on News 12 New Jersey.
John Abraham's cruiser struck a utility pole near police headquarters on Teaneck Road between Holland Terrace and Bennett Street around 2 a.m, the report said. He was taken to Holy Name Hospital before being pronounced dead this morning.
The 37-year-old married father of a 5-year-old son had been on the force since 1994.
The cause of the crash is under investigation. Police said Abraham wasn't responding to a call at the time of the crash, but his computer showed he was checking some license plate numbers just before the accident. |
